I’ve received a lot of questions from ride alongs, vet students, job-shadows and some e-mails from readers about the logistics behind ambulatory work. So the next couple posts are about this side of the profession from my personal experience. This post pertains to scheduling, navigating, planning and glimpse at the financial side.

the Unexpected Problem #2 (ER case, part 1)

Fractures of the hind limb or pelvis usually carry a grave prognosis for the horse. The young mare we originally saw on emergency, not only had none-weight-bearing lameness, but further examination uncovered a second, equally serious problem…an unusual penetrating wound to the abdomen. Without the option for referral to an equine hospital, the mare’s chances of surviving suddenly drop. As we make efforts to treat her in the field, interesting facts begin to surface surrounding the mysterious penetrating wound injury and the possible events that caused it.

After 6 months of professional and personal hell, I quit my first job in private practice. Despite my old boss threatening to ensure I never become an equine vet, I found a new job within 2 months…and could not be happier!
